Students progress from children’s songs to classical repertoire for beginners. Building on the creative approach started in the Initiation Level, students also get a taste for improvisation and composition.

This level prepares students for the Preparatory A or Preparatory B exam of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.

Level 1 is intended for students 6 years old and up. It is comprised of a Songbook with songs and pieces by classical composers and in contemporary styles (blues, pop, etc.) and a Workbook with chapters on reading and writing music, music theory, ear training, solfege, harmony, improvisation and composition.

The Workbook also contains a chapter on the connections between music and mathematics.
